The EERA Joint Programme on clean Energy tranSition for Sustainable Society (JP e3s) has published the September 2026 version of its Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda (SRIA) 2023–2030. The new SRIA updates the Programme’s scope, objectives, ambitions and activities to reflect the rapidly evolving European energy landscape and the growing importance of strategic autonomy, industrial competitiveness, energy security and resilience.
At the core of the new Agenda is a reinforced commitment to understanding the Clean Energy Transition as a systemic socio-technical transformation. JP e3s will continue to strengthen the contribution of Social Sciences and Humanities, complementing techno-economic approaches and reinforcing the science-policy interface so that evidence and interdisciplinary expertise can more effectively inform decision-making.
The updated SRIA defines six Research Priorities and three Cross-Cutting Strategic Objectives, covering socio-technical transition pathways, just and citizen-centred transitions, sustainability and circularity, energy demand and flexibility, markets and governance, and integrated evidence and modelling for policy. It also updates the work of the five JP e3s Sub-Programmes and introduces three Thematic Groups dedicated to Education and Skills, Gender Perspectives in the Energy Transition, and Societal Readiness.
The new SRIA will guide JP e3s activities towards 2030, supporting EERA and the wider European research and policy community in advancing a sustainable, competitive, secure, resilient and socially just Clean Energy Transition.
