Call for abstracts - JP Smart Cities & e3s joint workshop "Towards a sustainable Clean Energy Transition in Cities: technical and societal perspectives”

The European Union has developed a comprehensive policy framework to guide the sustainable transformation of urban environments, with major initiatives such as the European Green Deal, the New European Bauhaus, the Renovation Wave Strategy, the EU Mission Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities, and the Urban Agenda for the EU. Energy transition is a key pillar in this effort, as cities account for the majority of global energy consumption and emissions. However, urban areas face complex challenges—technical, social, and environmental—that require integrated, interdisciplinary solutions.

In this context, the workshop "Towards a Sustainable Clean Energy Transition in Cities: Technical and Societal Perspectives", jointly organized by the EERA Joint Programmes Smart Cities and e3s, aims to explore these challenges and opportunities The event will take place on 10 October 2025 in Vienna, hosted by the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT). It will serve as a platform for collaboration across policy, technology, and social science communities, promoting inclusive, climate-resilient, and energy-conscious urban development across Europe.

A call for abstracts is now open, with a submission deadline of 10 June 2025.
