In September 2024, EERA's Joint Programmes on Hydropower, Clean Energy Transition for Sustainable Society (E3S), and Digitalisation for Energy hosted the "Revamping Hydropower Research" workshop in Brussels. The event explored how hydropower, digitalisation, and grid integration can contribute to a cost-effective clean energy transition, addressing Europe's efforts to meet its climate and energy targets.
Recent policy developments highlight hydropower’s strategic role in achieving these goals, emphasizing digitalisation, grid optimisation, and sustainability. In this context, researchers contributed with papers examining the technical, environmental, and socio-economic dimensions of hydropower’s future.
The proceedings of the workshop have now been published in IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, Volume 1442, featuring insights on:
✅ The Role of Hydropower in the Clean Energy Transition – Addressing its potential for energy flexibility, market integration, and accelerating the transition to renewables.
✅ LCA, Biodiversity, and Public Acceptance – Examining environmental impacts, public engagement, and socio-economic challenges.
✅ Digitalisation for Hydropower – Exploring AI, digital twins, and data-driven strategies to enhance hydropower efficiency.
The publication presents cutting-edge research that reflects the latest advancements in hydropower, sustainability, and digitalisation.
The EERA JPs e3s, Hydropower, and Digitalization for Energy extend their appreciation to all contributors and participants who made this publication possible!
